Lie and Wait

2006

Video documentation of action in front of German embassy in Kyiv. 4’30’’

The action «Lie and wait» recorded an act of public resistance and disagreement regarding the humiliating procedure of obtaining a Schengen visa for Ukrainians. A background of the action was a negative experience of the artist himself who wanted to travel but was refused a visa by EU countries several times. After another failure, Ridnyi laid down on the ground in front of the German embassy in Kyiv and demanded a visa. The police carried out the resisting artist and threatened him with community service. Only 11 years later, the European Union provided visa-free regime for citizens of Ukraine (which allows up to 90 days visa-free travel).
